LL.M. Legal Reading, Writing and Analysis – 6023

Fall 2015

This class is designed to help LL.M. students build theskills necessary to succeed in law school – whether they plan to earn only aLL.M. degree or to continue their studies an earn a J.D. or S.J.D. degree --and in their future professional and academic endeavors.

The class is divided into three sections, and each one focuseson a fundamental skill needed in law school: reading, legal composition andlegal analysis. Part one, lasting the first four weeks of class, will focus onreading comprehension and reading skills. Class exercises will examine casesand legal terminology and students will learn strategies and tips for readingcases in English, often the most challenging part of law school. Part two willfocus on legal composition, and students will examine English syntax andstructure and learn how to improve their written English. Part three, lastingapproximately five weeks, will instead introduce students to legal analysis andexamine the elements and US legal analysis and the use of case law. 

This class is recommended for LL.M. students who feel lessconfident with their English skills and want additional work strengthen theseskills to build a strong foundation for success in the LL.M. program. It is strongly recommended that students who plan to transfer orare considering transferring into a JD program enroll in the LL.M. LegalReading, Writing and Analysis class in the fall semester and the LL.M. LegalWriting and Legal Skills II class in the spring semester.Â
