Description:

Education Law will explore philosophical, judicial, legislative and policy debates concerning education in the United States. The course is taught in a survey format, and will cover benchmark legal issues, including the right to a public education, freedom of speech in the educational setting, school financing, integration/desegregation, sexual harassment, gender equity, special education, affirmative action, the intersection of education and religion, federal versus state mandates in education, and remedies. There are no prerequisites. Students will be graded on the following: 1) Field Research Project (visit to a local school and a report on findings)(30% of grade); 2) Weekly 1-2 page Position Papers (20%); Final Paper (50%).
