Description:

This clinic is designed to give students exposure to the practice of law and experience in policy development in a community-based setting. Students partner, in varying capacities, with community nonprofit service organizations, legal service organizations, and community liaisons. They are organized into substantive area teams such as immigration, sex trade, or reentry, and each team develops and follows through on policy initiatives specifically related to their respective substantive areas.

The primary components of clinical work consist of: 1. Immersion in the work of a community-based organization to learn about current systemic issues and problem solving strategies; 2. Documentation and analysis of law and policy in partnerships with lawyering organizations, nonprofit service providers and interactions with community members; 3. Contributions to policy development through discrete, well-defined projects involving, eg, legislative advocacy, community forums, position papers, or empirical research; 4. Building relationships with the local community through community education and by networking with key community partners.

As part of a wraparound services approach, students work with their partnering organizations, law school faculty, and community legal partners to develop discrete projects addressing legal advocacy and policy concerns identified by these groups. Working in teams, students take responsibility for a particular project and see it through to completion. Projects may involve legislative drafting, investigation and advocacy; empirical research and analysis; community education workshops; targeted interviewing and data collection; organizing and facilitating community forums; developing accessible materials or web sites on legal procedures; or contributing to the formation and publication of reform policies.
