Description:

Study of systems in several foreign countries for the investigation, adjudication and punishment of criminal violations. Primary emphasis will be on "civil law" systems in Germany and France, but some attention will also be given to requirements imposed under the European human rights convention. The seminar will analyze the major similarities and differences between American and foreign systems, with emphasis on differing foreign procedures which might be adaptable to the American context, to address some of the perceived shortcomings of our system of criminal justice.

Reading knowledge of a foreign language is helpful, but is not required; all course materials will be in English.

A term paper is required.
