Tim Pawlenty (’86) Announces Bid for Presidency

Former Minnesota Governor and Class of 1986 Law School alumnus Tim Pawlenty unofficially announced his candidacy for president of the United States on May 22, 2011, in a short video released on his Web site, www.TimPawlenty.com. He made his official announcement May 23 in Des Moines, Iowa.

Sylvester James Jr. (’83) Receives ABA’s 2011 Solo and Small Firm Lifetime Achievement Award

The General Practice, Solo and Small Firm Division of the ABA honored Sylvester "Sly" James Jr. (’83) with its 2011 Solo and Small Firm Lifetime Achievement Award at its spring meeting luncheon in St. Louis on May 13. The award goes to attorneys who are recognized by their peers as embodying the ideals of the legal profession and as serving a professional lifetime of significant distinction.

Satisfying Results for Former Tax Clinic Students Charles Sloane (’10), Emily Gleiss (’10)

On May 5, 2011, the U.S. Tax Court issued an opinion in a case Charles Sloane (’10) argued nearly two years ago, as a student in the Law School’s Tax Clinic. Fellow Tax Clinic student Emily Gleiss (’10) argued a similar case, which was decided at the time.

Law School Bids Farewell to Legal Pioneer C. Paul Jones ('50)

C. Paul Jones ('50), Minnesota's first public defender, an adjunct professor at the Law School for 20 years, and a professor at William Mitchell College of Law for 50 years, passed away April 19, 2011, in Minneapolis. He was 84.

Allen Saeks ('56), James Steiner ('72) Named Distinguished Alumni

The Minnesota Law Review honored Allen I. Saeks ('56) and James D. Steiner ('72) with its 2011 Distinguished Alumni Award at its annual banquet on April 14, 2011. The award is given for exceptional contributions to the profession and to the greater good of society.

Catharine Haukedahl ('79) Named MMLA Executive Director

Catharine F. Haukedahl ('79), selected by the board of directors as executive director of Mid-Minnesota Legal Assistance (MMLA), assumed her new role on Feb. 16, 2011. She is responsible for fulfilling the mission and goals of the multi-office, 60-attorney program.

Alumnus David McMillan ('87) Elected to Board of Regents

On Feb. 21, 2011, the Minnesota State Legislature appointed four new members to the University of Minnesota Board of Regents. Among the distinguished candidates elected to serve a six-year term is David McMillan, a 1987 graduate of the Law School. He represents Minnesota's Eighth Congressional District, which includes Duluth.
