Melvin R. Mooty (’51), a named partner at Gray, Plant, Moody, Mooty & Bennett, passed away on May 30, 2012, at age 84 at a Minnetonka, Minn., care facility of complications from Parkinson's disease. He is "widely recognized as one of the best real estate lawyers in Minnesota," says a tribute on the firm's site.
Patrick Diamond (’86) of the Hennepin County Attorney's Office has been appointed to the bench of Minnesota's Second Judicial District Court (Ramsey County), Gov. Mark Dayton's office announced June 1, 2012. Diamond and an additional appointee, Public Defender Leonardo Castro, will fill vacancies created by the appointment of Judge Edward J. Cleary (’77) to the Minnesota Court of Appeals and the retirement of Judge Steven D. Wheeler.
Kathleen Sanberg (’82), a judge on the Minnesota Tax Court, was selected by Minnesota Women Lawyers (MWL) to receive its 2012 Myra Bradwell Award. It goes to an MWL member who exemplifies the highest ideals of the legal profession and the courage, perseverance, and leadership on women's issues of the award's namesake.
Kathleen D. Sheehy (’84) has been appointed to the bench of Minnesota's Fourth Judicial District Court (Hennepin County), Gov. Mark Dayton's office announced May 30, 2012. Sheehy and additional appointees Martha Holton Dimick and Edward Wahl replace retiring Judges Cara Lee Neville, Beryl A. Nord (’73), and George F. McGunnigle.
Three Law School alumni received Hennepin County Bar Association (HCBA) awards at the 93rd annual luncheon meeting and awards presentation on May 24, 2012, at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center. Judge Toddrick Barnette (’92) and Joseph T. Dixon Jr. (’69) received the Professionalism Award, and Leslie M. Altman (’83) received the Diversity Award.
Alumni Bridget Ahmann (’85) and Joseph Price (’72), along with their Faegre Baker Daniels colleagues Jennifer Dukart and Denise Kettelberger, received a 2012 Burton Award for Legal Achievement in the law firm legal writing category for their article "We're Not in Kansas Anymore, Toto: Product Liability Biologics and Biosimilars."
On April 26, 2012, Catharine F. Haukedahl (’79), a member of the Law School's Board of Advisors, received the 2012 Minnesota State Bar Association (MSBA) David Graven Public Service Award, given to the lawyer who best exemplifies high professional standards and a commitment to public or community service.
