Starting this fall, the Law School began sending out a digest email at the beginning of every month (except for those when e>Perspectives is sent) detailing upcoming opportunities for engagement with the Law School via events and volunteerism. Alumni play a critical role in attracting the best and brightest students to the Law School each year. The Office of Admissions is looking for volunteers to participate in its upcoming recruitment initiatives, ranging from attending a happy hour during an admitted students weekend to being profiled for the admitted students website. Erin McDonald (’13) was announced as the overall grand prize winner with her video "Forget about the Price Tag" in the Healthy Young America Video Contest. In August 2013, Young Invincibles, in partnership with the Department of Health and Human Services, launched the contest in an effort to mobilize young people to help educate and inform one another about the Affordable Care Act. The Siemens Foundation announced that David Etzwiler (’90) joined the organization as CEO, effective Oct. 22, 2013. In this newly created position, Etzwiler oversees day-to-day operations while implementing a strategic vision that expands the foundation's reach and impact. The foundation's mission is to support innovation, research, and educational initiatives in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM); it provides more than $7 million annually to enhance STEM education in the United States.
Judge Edward J. Cleary (’77) was appointed chief judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals, effective Nov. 1, 2013. The former chief judge, Matthew Johnson, had previously announced that he would not seek reappointment when his term ended on Oct. 31.
Arne Sorenson (’83), President and CEO of Marriott International, was one of three business executives chosen in September to advise President Barack Obama on matters of international trade.
On Monday, January 6, 2014, from 7–9 p.m., New York City-area alumni are invited to attend a reception at Alston & Bird to socialize and toast the Law School's 125th anniversary. The event is hosted by Dean David Wippman, Professor William McGeveran, and NYC Alumni Ambassadors Lindsay Moilanen (’09), Sandip Patel (’13), Mathew Rotenberg (’13) and Sitso Bediako (’08). The reception will feature remarks by Dean Wippman, who will address "The State of the Law School in its 125th Year," and Professor McGeveran, who will speak about "Lawyers as Problem Solvers: Educating the Next Generation." On Thursday, February 13, 2014, from 8:30–10 a.m., Washington-area alumni are invited to attend a breakfast reception on Capitol Hill in the Rayburn House Office Building, Rooms B339-40. The event is hosted by Dean David Wippman and Washington, D.C.-Area Alumni Ambassadors Maisa Jean Frank (’10), Kate McKnight (’08), Chuck Bruse (’71) and Nicolas Sanchez (’06). The reception will feature Minnesota's Fifth District congressman, Keith Ellison (’90), and Dean Wippman will present an update on the Law School and a brief perspective on the school's 125th anniversary. You are welcome to bring a guest or prospective law student. Tickets are $15 per person, which includes a full, hot breakfast.
On Saturday, March 8, 2014, from 5–6:30 p.m., the Office of Advancement will host a TORT pre-show happy hour event at Kieran's Irish Pub in downtown Minneapolis. The reception is open to all students and alumni and will precede the 7 p.m. Saturday performance of TORT's 2014 production, "Clue: A Murder Mystery in Mondale," at the Pantages Theatre. Spring Alumni Weekend is April 25-26, 2014. The annual weekend of festivities includes several events open to the entire alumni community, as well as special reunion events for the classes of pre-1964, 1964, 1969, 1974, 1979, 1984, 1989, 1994, 1999, 2004, and 2009.
