Professor Sheng-ping Gao is a research scholar who came to the Law School last fall to continue his studies on American secured transactions and consumer bankruptcy. He has taught secured transactions, corporations, and civil, contract, and property law in the law and business schools of Renmin University of China since 2002.

Gao completed an LL.M. and a Ph.D. at China University of Political Sciences and Law in Beijing and a B.A. at Central China Normal University in Wuhan. He has worked as a lawyer, an economist, an international business engineer, and an in-house legal counsel.

Currently he is a legislative consultant for the National People’s Congress of China. From 2000-07 he participated in drafting Part 4, dealing with security interests, of Property Law of the People’s Republic of China. Since 2008 he has been engaged in drafting Financial Leasing Law and Personal Bankruptcy Law. In addition, he has worked on large cooperative projects, including the Legal Protection of Creditors’ Rights in China, sponsored by People's Bank of China and the World Bank Group.

Gao has published numerous articles and monographs in his field and has worked alone and on teams to translate legal publications into Chinese. He has translated Article 9 of the Uniform Commercial Code (text and official comments); Restatement of the Law, Third, Suretyship and Guaranty; and Principles, Definitions and Model Rules of European Private Law.

His research interests include property, contract, real estate, property management, and land management law. Research on a special interest, secured transactions law, has been underway for more than ten years, most recently at Renmin’s Research Center for Civil and Commercial Law. In 2008 he received the Award of Excellent Research from China’s Ministry of Justice.
