The Campaign For The University of Minnesota Law School

Partner with us. One gift every year.

What does the Partners in Excellence Annual Fund support?

Unrestricted annual gifts—contributions made without limitation as to their use—made by alumni and friends help support the Law School’s most pressing needs. These funds are in large part committed to critical areas such as financial aid, scholarships, clinics, journals, student organizations, alumni activities, symposia and conferences. Simply put, with state support rapidly disappearing, the Law School relies on Partners in Excellence to pick up where endowment income and tuition revenue leave off, providing both core support and the flexibility to take advantage of opportunities that arise throughout the year.

Why is the Annual Fund so important to the Law School?

Every day University of Minnesota Law School students tackle a challenging curriculum, learn from distinguished faculty, and create life-long personal and professional connections. Every day our alumni benefit from their high-caliber legal education as well as the continued recognition and success of the Law School. One gift every year has an exponential impact on our resources. For example, an annual gift of $5,000 (from one person or several people combined) is equivalent to the yearly income from an endowment over $110,000. Your gift—of any amount—goes a long way every day.

Giving through this channel also has collateral benefits: Alumni participation in the Partners in Excellence Annual Fund is the measuring stick for alumni satisfaction with the quality of the legal education received and serves as a vital endorsement among prospective students and faculty. One gift every year advances the Law School’s professional excellence and stature in the community, while demonstrating your personal commitment and professional gratitude.

Why one gift every year?

The Law School’s endowment income is insufficient to meet student need. The Partners in Excellence Annual Fund provides immediate support to the Law School’s annual operating budget. With each new fiscal year comes a new operating budget, and with each new operating budget comes the need for renewed annual support. The Partners in Excellence Annual Fund represents not just a handful of large gifts, but leverages the power of literally thousands of modest gifts. Each year, the collective support of our alumni and friends makes a real difference in the life of the Law School and our students.

When should I make my gift?

The Law School operates on a fiscal year that begins on July 1 and ends on June 30. Making your gift early in the fiscal year saves you from being solicited multiple times and relieves the Law School of the need, and cost, of sending reminders throughout the year. Many alumni prefer to make their gift before the end of the calendar year to take advantage of the IRS tax benefit.
