Past Events

The past events of the institute entail distinguished visits and presentations, an annual spring seminar series, and other events like hosting the Midwestern Law & Economics Association annual meeting. Details of these events can be found below.

2012-13 Past Events

October 3, 2012 - "Executive Superstars, Peer Groups and Over-Compensation - Cause, Effect and Solution" - Charles M. Elson and Craig K. Ferrere of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate Governance, University of Delaware, came to discuss their paper "Executive Superstars, Peer Groups and Over-Compensation - Cause, Effect and Solution," in which they argue that the present manner in which compensation is set is flawed. They propose an alternative—compensation committees should develop internally created standards of pay, relying less on benchmarking.

2011-12 Past Events

April 20, 2012 - Sheldon Garon, Nissan Professor in Japanese Studies and Professor of History and East Asian Studies at Princeton University, gave a lecture on his book Beyond Our Means: Why America Spends While the World Saves.

2010-11 Past Events

April 13, 2011 - Steven Davidoff, the "Deal Professor" columnist for the New York Times and professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law, gave a lecture and Q&A entitled "Be Careful What You Wish For: Poison Pills, Shareholder Activists and the State of Takeover Law."

Oct. 1 - Nov. 15, 2010 - Prof. Barbara Luppi, Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Italy). She holds a B.A. in Economics from the University of Bologna, cum laude, receiving the Rotary Prize for the highest GPA in her graduating year. She received a MSc in Economics with Distinction (top 1%) and a Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics. She also received a Ph.D. in Political Economics from the University of Bologna. Before joining the University of Modena, she held a visiting appointment at Tel-Aviv University. She specializes in the economic analysis of law, with applications to contract theory, torts and banking regulation. Her recent articles have been published in the Journal of Legal Studies, Journal of Institutional Economics, Public Choice, and Review of Law and Economics.

2009-10 Past Events

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, March 1-3, 2010
Prof. Bart Wilson, Chapman University School of Law and Economic Science Institute. Prof. Wilson is one of the world's leading experiment economists. He is currently pursuing research on the foundations of exchange and specialization and the origins of property right systems in laboratory economies. His other research programs apply the experimental method to topics in gasoline markets, e-commerce, electric power deregulation, and antitrust. Dr. Wilson is part of a team, lead by Nobel Laureate Vernon Smith, that will create and run the new Economic Science Institute at Chapman.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, April 20, 2010
Jonathan Katz was Secretary of the U. S. Securities and Exchange Commission for twenty years. His tenure as Secretary spanned seven SEC Chairmen and four Acting Chairmen. Since his retirement in January 2006, Mr. Katz has served as a consultant on SEC regulatory requirements and worked with foreign governments and markets in Mexico, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Russia, Turkey, South Africa and the Phillipines. Mr. Katz has also served as an advisor to international organizations and foreign governments on the development and regulation of capital markets in developing countries. He has written several articles on capital market regulation, including the United States Chamber of Commerce published report in 2009, Examining the Efficiency and Effectiveness of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, March 26-27, 2009  
Prof. Richard Brooks, Yale Law School  Prof. Brooks' expertise is in law and economics, contracts, business organizations, and race and the law. He has a B.A. from Cornell, an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkeley, and a J.D. from the University of Chicago. His speaking schedule will include FWIP and the Public Policy Workshop hosted by Prof. Jill Hasday.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, February 23-24, 2009 
Prof. Brian Cheffins, SJ Berwin Professor of Corporate Law, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Prof. Cheffins' research interests are in company law, corporate governance, and law and economics. He is an internationally known lecturer and has written numerous publications.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, February 10, 2009  
Judge Guido Calabresi, U.S. 2nd Circuit Judge and Professorial Lecturer in Law, Yale Law School. Judge Calabresi has been awarded some 40 honorary degrees from U.S. and overseas universities and is the author of 4 books and more than 100 articles on law and related subjects. He recently accepted the law school's William B. Lockhart award.

Weekly Seminar Series, Spring 2009: International Corporate Governance, Development and Finance
This seminar focused on three topics in international (and comparative) law and economics: corporate governance, development, and finance.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, Fall 2008

Prof. Thomas S. Ulen, Swanlund Chair & Chair & Director, Illinois Program in Law & Economics, University of Illinois College of Law. Prof. Ulen examines a variety of issues related to economics, legal scholarship, and legal education.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, April 29-30, 2008
Prof. Steven Davidoff, Wayne State University Law School. Professor Davidoff teaches a capital markets seminar, corporations, corporate finance, law & economics, mergers & acquisitions and securities regulation. His research focus is on corporate governance, regulation of hedge funds, mergers & acquisitions and securities regulation.

Distinguished Visitor to the Institute, Spring 2008
Professor Giuseppe Dari-Mattiacci, Amsterdam Center for Law & Economics. Prof. Dari-Mattiacci specializes in the economic analysis of fundamental areas of the law, such as tort, contract, property and litigation. His research interests also cover welfare vs. fairness, public choice, evolution of law, ancient law, and slavery.

Weekly Seminar Series, Spring 2008: Corporate Governance
