Mock Trial Scholars Program Schedule

August 4-8, 2014


Following is a tentative outline of the schedule for the week. All lecture and discussion sessions will be conducted by experienced attorneys. Hands-on activities will be done with the help and supervision of experienced law student coaches, assisted also by attorneys. Evenings will include some study time along with games, movies, and other activities to help students wind down and relax after their busy days. All evening activities will be supervised by law students, who will be living in the dorm with the high school Mock Trial Scholar Program participants. Please note that the schedule and order of activities is subject to change.

 

Monday

  • Arrival and check-in
  • Meet and greet with students, coaches, lawyers
  • Orientation
  • Lecture and discussion: legal professionalism, civility, and courtroom decorum
  • Hands-on: mock trial case analysis and small team work with coaches regarding themes and strategy
  • Ice-breaker games and activities

 

Tuesday

  • Lecture and discussion: evidence and objections
  • Lecture and discussion: direct examination
  • Lecture and discussion: cross examination
  • Hands-on: draft, practice, and revise direct and cross examinations with the help of law student and lawyer coaches
  • Special group tour of University of Minnesota campus conducted by the Undergraduate Admissions Office
  • Movie night! Enjoy legal-themed movie and discussion

 

Wednesday

  • Lecture and discussion: opening statements
  • Hands-on: draft, practice, and revise opening statements with the help of law student and lawyer coaches
  • Observe real court proceedings in Minneapolis, followed by discussion and analysis with experienced attorneys
  • Selected clips from great law movies; games

 

Thursday

  • Lecture and discussion: closing arguments
  • Hands-on: draft, practice, and revise direct and cross examinations with the help of law student and lawyer coaches
  • Hands-on: polish and practice case in chief in preparation for Friday's mock trials with the help of law student and lawyer coaches
  • Pool, ping-pong, and other study breaks as teams prepare for trials

 

Friday

  • Hands-on: every student participates in an attorney role in a full mock trial presided over by experienced attorneys or judges, followed by extensive feedback and discussion
  • Awards ceremony and reception – parents invited!
