2008 Minnesota Journal of International Law Symposium

Symposium:
Creating a Global Rule of Law Culture

Friday, November 14, 2008
University of Minnesota Law School
Lockhart Hall (Room 25)

The rule of law is a foundation of free, just, and prosperous societies. Rule of law also is challenging to define and even more difficult to create in form and substance, in institutions and in cultures, in laws and in the hearts and minds of people. The Minnesota Journal of International Law’s 2008 Symposium will examine the rule of law as an emerging framework for international legal reform and development focusing on the broad theme of creating a global rule of law culture. Our panelists include eminent scholars, practitioners, and judges with broad experience in studying the rule of law and leading rule of law reform efforts around the world.

The symposium’s featured panel brings together a group of founders of CEELI and the American Bar Association’s Rule of Law Initiative. CEELI was founded in 1990 as an ABA international legal assistance project in central and Eastern Europe. The Rule of Law Initiative has since grown to also include legal reform programs in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. This panel will be a unique opportunity to reflect on the history and legacy of the world’s leading rule of law institution and the rule of law as a framework for reform and development going forward.

Please Register by Friday, November 7, 2008

There is no cost for attending the symposium, which includes lunch and refreshments throughout the day-long program. We do, however, require advance registration for attendees planning to attend lunch. To register, please complete the registration form.
