Third-year Law School student Kate Kalanick took first place in the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL) Selma Moidel Smith Law Student Writing Competition for 2010. Her winning entry was entitled “Thirty Years of Labor Pains: How the Supreme Court Failed to Protect Working Women in AT&T v. Hulteen by Allowing Pregnancy Discrimination to Continue Into the 21st Century.”

This fall the Law School will host the first in a series of conferences designed to foster meaningful dialogue about the future of the financial services industry and to inform and influence market participants, policy makers, and regulators.

On Thursday, Aug. 12, the Law School began the LL.M. Program for Foreign Lawyers Class of 2011 with a three-week orientation and introductory course.

On behalf of the entire University of Minnesota system, the University of Minnesota Law School will present a program on Constitution Day, Sept. 17, 2010, commemorating the U.S. Constitution. One CLE credit has been requested.

Michelle Miller (’86), vice president and senior counsel in employment law and chief diversity and inclusion officer at Medtronic, will present the Bearmon Orientation Keynote Address on August 31, the first day of the Law School’s Orientation Program for incoming students.

Among the first remarks Koua Fong Lee made to the crowd of reporters, family, and well-wishers greeting him on his release from prison Aug. 5 were words of thanks to the Innocence Project of Minnesota. Dedicated staff at the Project and the affiliated Innocence Project Clinic at the University of Minnesota Law School were instrumental in securing his freedom.
