Law School Celebrates 125 Years of Legal Education at the University of Minnesota

The University of Minnesota Law School celebrates its 125th anniversary with two special lectures and a gala commemorating the founding of what has grown to be respected as one of the top law schools in the country. Both lectures will take place at the Law School and are free and open to the public.

Journal of Law and Inequality Symposium to Celebrate Civil Rights Act's 50th Anniversary

The University of Minnesota Law School's Journal of Law and Inequality will host its annual symposium, "Civil Rights and Civil Justice: 50 Years Later," from 8:45 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. on October 18, 2013, in Lockhart Hall (Room 25).

Judge Edward J. Cleary ('77) Appointed Chief Judge of Minn. Court of Appeals

Judge Edward J. Cleary ('77) has been appointed chief judge of the Minnesota Court of Appeals, effective Nov. 1, 2013. The current chief judge, Matthew Johnson, had previously announced that he would not seek reappointment when his term ends on Oct. 31.

Oriented Toward Law School Success

All law students are "travelers in a strange land," Assistant Dean of Students Erin Keyes ('00) told members of the University of Minnesota Law School J.D. class of 2016 during her opening remarks in August. Keyes spoke to the assembled group as part of this year's orientation program, along with Dean David Wippman and Law Council President Anna Mazig ('14).

Professor Joan Howland Elected Chair-Elect/Chair of ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar Council

In August, Professor Joan S. Howland was elected chair-elect/chair of the ABA Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar Council for the 2013-15 terms. Howland has served on the Section's Council since 2006 and was vice-chair of the council for the 2012-13 term. She also served on the Accreditation Committee from 2001-06 and on the Law Libraries Committee from 1992-96 (as co-chair from 1994-96).

Human Rights Center Welcomes Colombian Visitors

The University of Minnesota Law School Human Rights Center and the College of Liberal Arts will celebrate the inauguration of the UMN - Antioquia Human Rights Law Partnership on September 10 at a reception at the Law School. The event will welcome nine visiting faculty, staff and students from four partnering academic institutions in the Antioquia region of Colombia.
