William B. Lockhart Lecture: "Selecting Judges, English Style: Are There Lessons for the U.S.?"
Dame Hazel Genn, Dean of Laws, Professor of Socio-Legal Studies, and co-director of the University College London Judicial Institute, will deliver the annual William B. Lockhart Lecture. She is an inaugural member of the independent Judicial Appointments Commission for England and Wales and will draw on her experience in speaking about various issues concerning judicial selection. Among questions to be addressed: How and why did England change its method of selecting judges from what was used in the latter half of the 20th century? How does the current system ensure high-quality selections? What continuing challenges does the Commission face? What are the lessons for others striving to improve the quality of the judiciary?
