Negotiation Team Ranks Fifth at ABA Nationals

FEBRUARY 23, 2010—On Feb. 4-7, 2010, in Orlando, Fla., Danielle Bailey ('11) and Emily Van Vliet ('10) competed in the ABA National Negotiation Competition and also accepted their trophy for placing first at the November ABA Regional Negotiation Competition. Student coaches Bobby Mir ('12) and Ben Tozer ('12) and faculty adviser Mary Alton accompanied the team.

This year's national competition topics were employment law and arbitration fairness. Bailey and Van Vliet participated in three rounds of negotiation, acting as counsel for a business owner who had fired an employee. They advanced to the semi-finals, scoring fourth overall in the national tournament. They were fifth-ranked because of the tournament brackets.

The overall national competition winner, a team from Boston University, will join an international competition in Australia in July. The field of competitors for this challenging event starts with more than 200 teams from more than 100 law schools. Congratulations Danielle and Emily!
