Arent Fox Diversity Scholarship Program

$15,000 scholarship and paid summer associate position after the first year of law school awarded to three first-year law students who are members of a diverse population historically under-represented in the legal profession. Candidates may apply to only one of the firm’s offices: Washington, D.C., New York, or Los Angeles. Recipients demonstrate excellent academic performance, communication skills, leadership, and community involvement.

Buckfire & Buckfire, P.C. Diversity Scholarship

$2,000 scholarship  awarded to a student who is currently attending an accredited law school and is either a member of an ethnic or racial minority or demonstrates commitment to issues of diversity within their academic career.

Carmody & Torrance and Northeast Utilities Legal Department Diversity Scholar Program
10-12 week salaried summer associate position for a second-year student of a diverse background, half spent at Northeast Utilities Legal Department participating in work of in-house attorney at a major Connecticut utility,  the other half at Carmody & Torrance gaining experience in the work at a large firm. A mentor from each organization provides professional and personal development assistance.

Cooley Diversity Fellowships
Paid summer associate position after completion of second year and an award of up to $15,000 to assist with law school tuition, awarded to f
irst-year law students who demonstrate leadership, academic excellence, community service, and a commitment to promoting diversity may apply for a Cooley Diversity fellowship.

Davis Wright Tremaine 1L Diversity Scholarship Program
Two scholarships of $7,500 toward second-year tuition and expenses, plus a paid summer clerkship (one in Seattle, one in Portland) between the first and second years of law school. Awarded to first-year law students of color or others of diverse backgrounds who have a record of high academic achievement and a commitment to promoting diversity are eligible to apply for the Davis Wright Tremaine diversity scholarship.

Dinsmore & Shohl Diversity Scholarship Program
Scholarship of $5,000 to $10,000 for first- and second-year law students who are members of groups historically under-represented in the legal profession or who contribute meaningfully to diversity in their communities. In addition, one first-year student is offered a paid summer associate position split between Dinsmore’s Cincinnati office and Procter & Gamble, along with a scholarship. Successful applicants have a strong record of academic or professional achievement, leadership, and commitment to diversity.

Dorsey & Whitney Diversity Fellowship Program

This fellowship offers students of diverse backgrounds an opportunity to work as a summer associate in Dorsey & Whitney’s Denver, Minneapolis, or Seattle office after the second year of law school. At the end of the summer, fellows will receive $10,000 toward law school tuition and expenses. Successful applicants have a demonstrated record of academic achievement and a commitment to promoting diversity in the legal community.

Faegre Baker Daniels Diversity & Inclusion Fellowship
$10,000 scholarships and a summer associateship awarded to four law students between their second and third years at one of the firm’s four U.S. offices. A key element of the program is mentorship by a firm lawyer to help recipients make the transition from student to law firm associate. Recipients are chosen, in part, on the basis of an essay describing how diversity has affected their lives and the legal profession.

Fish & Richardson 1L Diversity Fellowship Program

Fellowship consisting of a $5,000 academic scholarship, mentoring by members of the firm, and a paid summer associate position after the first year of law school in one of the Fish & Richardson offices across the country.

Foster Pepper 1L Diversity Fellowship

Paid summer associate position in the firm’s Seattle office and a $7,500 academic scholarship to be applied toward the second year of law school for first-year students of color or other diverse background who contribute meaningfully to the diversity of the legal profession. Applicants committed to practicing in Seattle after graduation are preferred.

Fowler White Boggs Diversity Scholarship Program

This scholarship program is open to law students in their second or third year who have demonstrated a commitment to diversity. Up to two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year.

Fredrikson & Byron Foundation Minority Scholarship Program

One $10,000 scholarship awarded to a first-year law student of diverse background on the basis of law school performance, professional references, work and other activities, and writing samples. The program’s purpose is to promote the legal training of minority students and encourage them to join private corporate practice in the Upper Midwest.

Fried Frank Fellowships
Fried Frank has joined with the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, Inc. (LDF) and the Mexican-American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) to offer fellowships that give an entry-level lawyer the opportunity to spend two years as a Fried Frank litigator and then two years as a staff attorney with LDF or MALDEF. The ideal candidate for a Fried Frank Fellowship is a third-year law student or recent graduate currently in a judicial clerkship. Candidates for the fellowships should have a genuine interest in both corporate and civil rights litigation.

Hastie Fellowship Program at the University of Wisconsin Law School

For more than 35 years, the University of Wisconsin’s William H. Hastie Fellowship Program has provided an opportunity for lawyers of color to prepare for a career in law teaching. The Hastie Fellowship is customarily a two-year program, leading to an LL.M. degree. Candidates pursue a scholarly interest of their choice and are encouraged both to pursue publishable research for their thesis and to demonstrate a capacity to contribute as a scholar to legal studies.

Latham & Watkins Diversity Scholars Program
$10,000 scholarship for third year of law school awarded to four to six diverse second-year students who have demonstrated academic achievement and leadership. Applicants should have an interest in practicing global law, an intention to stay in the U.S., and a desire to support and contribute to the diversity objectives of their firm and the greater legal profession.

Law Preview Scholarship
Law Preview partners with leading law schools, law firms, companies and other organizations that fund full scholarships for diverse incoming law students to attend a Law Preview summer session. To be eligible to become a Law Preview Scholarship recipient, applicants must be enrolled to begin classes at the University of Minnesota Law School in the following fall semester and must be a member of a racial/ethnic group which has been historically underrepresented in the legal profession or a member of the LGBT community.

MN Association of Black Lawyers (MABL) Foundation Scholarship

Awarded to talented law students of color throughout Minnesota who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement, commitment to addressing issues affecting their community, and the potential to effectuate the overall goals of the organization.

Michigan Auto Law Diversity Scholarship

$2,000 scholarship to provide financial support to students who contribute to the diversity of the law school student body as they pursue their legal career.

Milbank Diversity Scholars Program
$25,000 scholarship for the third year of law school (and an additional $25,000 upon full-time employment with Milbank), plus a salaried ten-week 2L summer associate position. Open to students who have completed their first year of law school and are members of groups traditionally under-represented in large law firms. Factors considered in selection include academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and writing and interpersonal skills.

Miller Johnson West Michigan Diversity Law School Scholarship
Scholarship awarded to a student of ethnic minority who is accepted to or attending an accredited U.S. law school. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen, have a permanent residence in Michigan, have a minimum GPA of 3.0, and demonstrate financial need.

MSBA 1L Clerkship Program

The Minnesota State Bar Association’s Diversity Committee established the Minnesota Minority Clerkship Program (MMCP) to offer minority students a summer clerkship, after their first year of law school, with participating Minnesota legal employers. The number of clerkships awarded, typically about 12, varies by the number of employers participating. During the 8- to 12-week clerkship, students perform research, writing, and analysis for the employer and its clients. They receive the employer’s normal salary for a first-year summer clerk position, mentorship, feedback, and an opportunity to gain real-world experience. The MMCP follows the EEOC definition of “minority.”

Munger, Tolles & Olson 1L Diversity Summer Program

Up to four paid 1L summer associate positions in the firm’s Los Angeles and San Francisco offices for exceptional first-year law students who are members of racial or ethnic minority groups, are GLBT, are physically challenged, or are from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. After seven weeks with the firm, participants have the option of working for four additional paid weeks at a nonprofit organization.

Native American Congressional Internships

10-week paid summer internship in Washington, D.C., for Native American and Alaska Native students who wish to learn more about the federal government and issues affecting Indian Country. Interns work in congressional and agency offices where they have opportunities to research legislative issues important to tribal communities, network with key public officials and tribal advocacy groups, experience an insider’s view of the federal government, and enhance their understanding of nation-building and tribal self-governance.

Perkins Coie 1L Diversity Student Fellowship
$7,500 academic scholarship and paid summer associate position after the first year of law school. Fellows are selected on the basis of academic achievement and meaningful contributions to diversity. Past recipients have included members of racial, ethnic, disabled and sexual orientation minority groups, as well as those who were the first person in their family to pursue higher education.

Reed Smith 1L Diverse Scholars Program
Two $15,000 awards toward second-year tuition and a paid summer associate position after the second year of law school in one of the firm’s offices. Application is open to first-year law students who have demonstrated excellent academic scholarship and a commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community.

Sidley Diversity & Inclusion Scholarship

$15,000 scholarship for second-year students who also join Sidley’s summer associate program following the second year of law school. Recipients have a demonstrated ability to contribute to the diversity of the law school, the firm, and the legal profession, as well as excellent leadership qualities and academic achievement.

Stoel Rives First-Year Law Student Diversity Fellowship

$7,500 tuition scholarship and a salaried summer associate position in Stoel Rives’ Portland and Seattle offices after the first year of law school. Criteria include academic and leadership excellence, commitment to community service, and meaningful contributions to diversity in the legal community. Applicants committed to living in Portland or Seattle after graduation are preferred.

Tonkon Torp First-Year Diversity Fellowship Program

$7,500 academic scholarship, summer associate position after the first year of law school, plus (if invited) a return to work at Tonkon Torp for the summer after the second year. Awarded to a member of a racial or ethnic minority  who demonstrate academic achievement, meaningful contributions to diversity, and a commitment to practice in Portland after law school graduation.

Zelle Hofmann Diversity in Law Scholarship

Paid summer clerkship in one of the firm’s offices following the first year of law school, awarded to law students who either (1) are a member of a diverse group (broadly defined to include race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation or gender identity, physical disability or economic/educational disadvantage) that is historically under-represented in the private practice of law; or (2) demonstrate a long-standing commitment to diversity that will be furthered by award of the scholarship. To ensure the recipient’s successful entry into the legal profession, the firm will assign an attorney to mentor the recipient for the student’s remaining law school career.
