Minnesota Advantage Program (MAP)

The Minnesota Advantage Program (MAP) provides current University of Minnesota undergraduate and graduate students at all five campuses an opportunity to apply to the Law School without having to take the LSAT. Students considering MAP should have researched law programs and determined that the University of Minnesota Law School is the best choice for their legal education. Applicants must NOT have taken the LSAT and must apply through LSAC.

Program Eligibility

Undergraduate students

  • Must currently be enrolled in an undergraduate degree program at any of the five University of Minnesota campuses before fall semester 2016 and be in good academic standing
  • Must have completed undergraduate degree before August 2016
  • Must apply before graduation (once you have graduated you are not eligible for this program)
  • Must score at or above the 85th percentile nationally on the ACT or SAT exam
  • Must rank in the top 10% of their undergraduate class through six semesters of academic work, OR achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above through six semesters of academic work
  • Must send ACT or SAT scores directly from the testing organization to MN Law Admissions by December 1, 2015 if graduating in the winter or June 1, 2016 if graduating in the summer (do not send through LSAC)

Graduate students

  • Must currently be enrolled in a graduate program at any of the five University of Minnesota campuses and be in good academic standing
  • Will receive J.D. degree, in addition to current graduate program degree
  • Must score at or above the 85th percentile nationally in the GRE or GMAT exam
  • Must rank in the top 10% of their undergraduate class through six semesters of academic work, OR achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or above through six semesters of academic work
  • Must send GRE or GMAT scores directly from the testing organization to MN Law Admissions by December 1, 2015 if graduating in the winter or June 1, 2016 if graduating in the summer (do not send through LSAC)

Application Requirements


MAP applicants must apply through the LSAC website and must pay for CAS and Law School Reports and the application fee. The following must be completed/submitted by December 1, 2015 (winter graduates) and June 1, 2016 (summer graduates):

  • Application form and MAP Agreement
  • Personal statement (uploaded at LSAC with application)
  • Résumé (uploaded at LSAC with application)
  • Official transcripts from the University of Minnesota and, if applicable, official transcripts from any other undergraduate or graduate institutions attended, such as community colleges and study abroad programs must be sent to LSAC
  • Undergraduate applicants: You must have your official ACT/SAT scores sent directly to the Law School Office of Admissions. Graduate applicants: you must have your GRE or GMAT scores sent directly to the Law School Office of Admissions. We do not need ACT/SAT scores from graduate students.
  • Two letters of recommendation (and maximum of three) written by University of Minnesota instructors and/or a pre-law advisor (please see instructions at LSAC)
  • Diversity statement (optional)

Interviews


MAP applicants will be selected for interviews based on a holistic assessment of the application materials. Selected applicants must be available to interview in person or via phone to be eligible for admission. The Admissions Office will contact applicants directly regarding interviews. Interviews will be conducted by Law School Admissions staff and are designed to provide the Admissions Committee with additional information on a candidate’s maturity, judgment, communication, analytical skills and motivation to pursue a legal education.

Application Timeline

  • September 1, 2015 – MAP application available
  • December 1, 2015 – MAP applications due for winter graduates (applications are due before you graduate if graduating before December 1)
  • June 1, 2016 – MAP applications due for summer graduates (applications are due before you graduate if graduating before June 1)
  • Summer 2016 – Candidate Interviews
  • Summer 2016 – Applicants notified of admission decision and seat deposit deadline
  • August 2016 – New student orientation
  • September 2016 – First day of fall classes

Financial Aid


Students applying for and admitted through MAP are eligible for the same types of financial aid and scholarships as J.D. applicants.

  • Scholarships – all applicants are considered and notified of merit-based scholarship awards at the time of admission. Scholarship awards range in amounts from $5,000 per year up to full-tuition. Most are renewable each year for three years under reasonable terms.
  • Financial Aid – all eligible applicants are encouraged to submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) beginning in January to be considered for various need-based aid. Click here for more information on tuition and fees and other available forms of aid.
