This course provides additional instruction in the legal analysis and legal writing concepts covered in the first-year legal research and writing course.
The course begins with four meetings in the first four weeks of the semester. These meetings will be scheduled at a day and time that works for all students (possibly over the lunch hour or in the evening). They will involve short written assignments and a peer review exercise; an opportunity to practice and refine your writing skills in a shorter format. Over the following four weeks, the class will not meet, but you will have a weekly meeting with an instructor for feedback on your 2L writing project, either your journal note or your moot court brief. In the last three weeks of the semester, the class will meet to work on writing for law school exams and to introduce the final project, a 6-8 page written assignment to be written over Winter Break (so as not to interfere with exams). The final assignment will be due in January, and there will be a final individual conference in early February to discuss the paper.
Enrollment in the course is limited to 16 students, and is by application to the Legal Writing Department. To apply, email lwd@umn.edu with an explanation of why you would like to take the course. The explanation should be around 500 words. Applications are due Tuesday, August 1, 2017.Â
This is a limited drop course: once you are admitted, you can drop only due to a time conflict with another course that the instructors cannot accommodate.Â
