Juvenile Justice – 6226

Spring 2018

This course will explore the historical, sociological, developmental and philosophical bases for according juveniles special status under the United States legal system. Students will study the history and processes of the U.S. juvenile justice system from its inception to its current state, including the policing and prosecution of juveniles who violate the criminal law, pretrial procedures, the juvenile court and juvenile corrections. Students will continually evaluate the efficacy and equity of the current system through classroom discussion, simulated exercise, live observation of juvenile court and written reflection.
