The practice of law is a business as well as a profession. This seminar course provides an introduction to some of the important and developing issues in the business of practicing law, whether as a solo practitioner or in a larger law firm. The topics of study will include developing and retaining clients, finances and financial controls, trends in the legal profession, conflicts of interest and ethical compliance, case handling and administration, insurance and risk management, hiring and supervision of employees, business formation, and law firm governance. Prominent lawyers and law firm managers will serve as guest lecturers and panelists in presenting certain topics. Students will be provided with a reading list by subject. Student performance will be assessed in part based on class participation and student presentations.
