The Center for New Americans will host a full-day immigration law conference titled Developments in Immigration Law: Crimmigration and Asylum on April 1, 2016 at the University of Minnesota Law School. Continuing legal education courses will be led by faculty and students from the Center’s clinics. The event offers lunch and five CLE credits will be requested.

Navigating DUI Convictions and Immigration Effects, Room 40

This CLE will focus on how DUI convictions can impact the non-citizen population after the November 20, 2014 change in priorities. There will be discussions of specific Minnesota challenges and potential solutions.

The Impact of Mellouli on Minnesota Drug Crimes, Room 40

Attendees will learn about the Mellouli v. Lynch Supreme Court case which was successfully handled by the Center for New Americans and its partners. Attendees will also learn about how immigration practitioners and criminal practitioners can take steps at each stage in the process to protect clients facing Minnesota drug charges and receive a new practice advisory outlining the effects of the Supreme Court's decisions on Minnesota law.

Criminal Dispositions and Immigration Consequences, Room 30

Criminal sentencing that results in a diversionary program or a disposition may have serious immigration consequences. This CLE will present the various immigration consequences that criminal dispositions and other sentences may have for clients.

This CLE will present strategies and tools to address prolonged immigration detention with a focus on habeas petitions in federal court. Attendees will receive templates used by the presenters to secure the release of a client in a case later featured in the New Yorker.
