Human Rights in Practice: Dr. Shamsul Bari
The Human Rights in Practice series gives students the opportunity to engage with international law and human rights practitioners in an informal setting and to learn about diverse career paths in the field.
Dr. Shamsul Bari (Bangladesh) served for over twenty years with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), including as the Regional Director for Central Asia, South West Asia, North Africa and the Middle East. In 2008 he was appointed Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia by the United Nations Human Rights Council and served in that role until 2014. Shamsul Bari is a Ph.D and a Barrister at Law. He has practiced law at the Dhaka High Court and has taught previously at the Universities of Chicago and Minnesota.
