Professors Erbsen and McGeveran Receive Prestigious Named Professorships

Effective immediately, Professors Allan Erbsen and William McGeveran have been named as the Popham, Haik, Schnobrich/Lindquist & Vennum Professor of Law and the Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty, & Bennett Professor of Law, respectively.

Professor Erbsen joined Minnesota Law in 2005. He teaches and writes in the areas of civil procedure and federal courts. His law review articles have appeared in Emory Law Journal, Minnesota Law Review, Notre Dame Law Review, UC Irvine Law Review, William & Mary Law Review, among others. In addition, he has authored several amici briefs, including a court-appointment to argue a case before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. 

Erbsen has twice received the Stanley V. Kinyon Teacher of the Year (2006 and 2007). Two of his articles have been selected for presentation at the prestigious Stanford/Yale Junior Faculty Forum. He was elected to membership in the American Law Institute in 2018. In 2015, Allan chaired the Association of American Law Schools Section on Civil Procedure. He served as the Law School’s associate dean for academic affairs from 2015-18. He held the Davis professorship for 2017-18.

The Popham, Haik, Schnobrich/Lindquist & Vennum Professorship was created in 1987 and was previously held by Professor Emeritus Fred Morrison.

Professor McGeveran joined the Law School in 2006. He specializes in information law, including data privacy, intellectual property, communications and technology, and free speech. He is the sole author of a casebook, Privacy and Data Protection Law, used by instructors at more than two dozen law schools. His law review articles have appeared in Arizona State Law Review, Boston University Law Review, Iowa Law Review, Notre Dame Law Review, Washington Law Review, among others. He is an affiliated professor at the University of Minnesota School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and he has been a resident fellow at the University of Minnesota Institute of Advanced Study.

McGeveran has also received the Stanley V. Kinyon Teacher of the Year (2009). He currently serves as the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs (2018-present). He held the Davis professorship for 2018-19.

The Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty, & Bennett Professorship was established in 1986 and it was most recently held by Professor Emeritus Stephen Befort ‘76.
