Happy New Year to our Minnesota Law community! We asked our faculty and staff to recommend their favorite books from the past year. Students and faculty of the Gun Violence Prevention Clinic, led by Visiting Clinical Professor of Law Megan Walsh, have been named Attorneys of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer for their work in Defending Minnesota Gun Regulation Post-Bruen.

Included in the group are: Prof. Megan Walsh, Aidan Earnest '24, Arielle Hugel ’25, David Lamb ’24, Rose Lewis '24, Wyatt Lutenbacher ’25, Ted Mathiowetz '24, Chad Nowlan '24, Emily Byers Olson ’25, Will Roberts ’25, Nicholas Taylor ’24, and Meghan Zula ’25.

Professor Linus Chan, the James H. Binger Professor of Clinical Law, has been named a Minnesota Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer in the Group category for his participation in "Immigration Attorneys for Drivers Licenses for All."

A team of three Minnesota Law students in the Federal Immigration Litigation Clinic (FILC) recently briefed and argued an appeal before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on behalf of an Iraqi citizen and long-term resident of the United States, Walid Abdulahad. The case, Abdulahad v. Garland, presents important issues of immigration and administrative law. The anticipated decision could impact the rights of noncitizens seeking protection in the United States from torture and other forms of violence inflicted on religious grounds.

The University of Minnesota Law School faculty have enthusiastically voted to grant Professor Alan Rozenshtein tenure, pending approval by the Board of Regents at the end of the academic year. 

In a landmark state civil rights decision, the Minnesota Supreme Court has decided that if racial segregation causes educational inadequacy, it is sufficient to establish a violation of the state constitution. Its deliberations relied in part on University of Minnesota Law School research.

Meet Elizabeth Mansfield, a current 2L at Minnesota Law and a passionate advocate for environmental and climate issues, especially as they intersect with human rights and the displacement of people around the world. 

Minnesota Law launched a new Gun Violence Prevention Clinic (GVP) earlier this year to train future attorneys to make an impact on gun laws and litigation. The clinic—a first-of-its-kind legal clinic in the nation— is already making a difference while ensuring that Minnesota continues to enforce its gun regulations.

Professor Fionnuala Ní Aoláin visited Lviv, Ukraine in December for the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights & the Genocide Convention. The convention was attended by 75 international lawyers from the American Society of International Law and 75 lawyers from the Ukrainian Association of International Law, all dedicated to upholding human rights and international law.

Two teams of Law School students performed extraordinarily well in the regional competition of the National Moot Court Competition, held in Cleveland, Ohio on November 10 and 11, 2023.

Both teams advanced to the semifinal rounds and the team representing Petitioner/Respondent advanced to the national rounds of the competition, which will be held in New York City in February, 2024.
