Description:
This course explores the general principles that courts and lawyers use in interpreting statutes. This includes various canons that refer to statutory text, legislative history, administrative agency interpretation, and various sources of public policy. In doing so, it explores in considerably more depth some of the topics discussed in the 1L statutory interpretation module tied to Legal Writing. It also discusses some additional topics, which may include theories of statutory interpretation, interpretation in light of other statutes, statutes passed by popular initiative, and legislative control of agency rulemaking.
