Pick-up your name card and begin assembling on the Northrop stairs for your class photo at 8:45 a.m. After the class photo, there will be some time to mingle before lining up alphabetically for the processional.
Coat Check A coat check will be available at Northrop on the East side of the building. Graduates are advised not to bring valuables that they can’t keep with them under their gown. Other than the coat check, there is not a location to store items during the ceremony. If you must bring a purse, backpack, or other valuables, leave them with your guest(s) in the audience.
Name Cards

You will pick-up your name card at Graduate Check-In. Confirm that the information listed is correct as it will be announced as you walk across the stage. Pens will be available for you to mark your card with phonetic notations. LL.M. graduates should pick-up their name card from Hannah Kuether.

Do not lose your name card! It includes a number on the back that is essential for both the class photo and the processional line-up.

Class Photo Please make every effort to arrive by 8:30 a.m. to get lined-up and robed properly. The J.D. class photo will be taken at 8:45 a.m., followed by the LL.M. class photo, and the M.S.P.L. class photo. Class photos will be taken outside on the Northrop stairs on the South side of the building (alternate weather location is inside the auditorium). If you are not there on time, you will not be in the photo.
Processional

All graduates will line-up on the West side of Northrop for the processional into the auditorium. Line-up will be based on the number listed on the back of your name card (alphabetical order).

Upon entering the auditorium, you will receive a Commencement program and Dean Keyes will direct you to your seat in the reserved section on the ground floor of the auditorium. Law School faculty will follow the graduate processional to take their seats on stage.

Remain standing until everyone is in place. You may be seated when Dean Jenkins indicates to do so.

Out of respect for other graduates, we request that you refrain from cell phone use throughout the entire ceremony.

Presentation of the Class of 2019

After the Regent confers degrees, Dean Keyes will direct the first row of graduates to approach the stage on stage right. Your tassel should be on the right side of your tam/cap at this time.

When you reach the stage, hand your name card to the faculty member announcing the graduates. Once your name is announced, you will walk across the stage to shake hands with the Regent, our Commencement speaker, and Dean Jenkins. A photo will be taken as you shake hands with Dean Jenkins.

Finally, you will exit the stage via the ramp on stage left and receive a graduation gift from the Alumni office. Return to your row as directed by Law School staff.

After all graduates have been presented, Dean Jenkins will instruct you to stand and move your tassel to the left side of your tam/cap.

Because the majority of students who attend Commencement have not yet completed their degree requirements, you will not receive a diploma or a diploma cover as you walk across the stage.

Only S.J.D. graduates will be hooded at the Commencement ceremony. S.J.D. graduates should speak with their faculty advisor about the hooding process and ensure his/her participation in the ceremony.

Photo on Stage

A professional photographer will be taking photos of each graduate as they shake hands with the Dean Jenkins.

Photos will be available to order through Grad Images approximately one week after Commencement. You will be able to search for your photos on Grad Images’ website by simply entering your Last Name, your School Name (use University of Minnesota), and selecting 2019 from the dropdown menu. Once you see your name, click on the link to view your photos. You may also contact their Customer Service Department at 800-261-2576 or email giservice@gradimages.net

To receive this information directly, you should list your email and/or your home address on your name card at Graduate Check-In. Grad Images will then send you a photo proof and information on how to order copies. There is no obligation to purchase.

Recessional

Upon the conclusion of Hail! Minnesota, Dean Jenkins will adjourn the program and leave stage with faculty to follow. Dean Keyes will then release graduate rows to exit the auditorium. Please join your guests in the Northrop Atrium for a light reception and to return your regalia.

To review the full ceremony process, watch the Law School’s 2018 Commencement.

Regalia Orders

Regalia may be rented or purchased through our regalia vendor, Herff Jones, and can be ordered online. An email with the order link will be sent to graduates early in Spring semester.

While tams/caps and gowns are optional, most graduates do tend to rent regalia. Those intending to purchase their regalia are strongly advised to order at least 8 weeks prior to the ceremony date to allow adequate time for delivery.

All questions regarding regalia should be directed to Herff Jones by email at gradmidwest@gmail.com or by phone at 952-447-4449.

Order Regalia Online

The last day to order regalia online is Friday, March 29 (EST). Orders placed after this date must be done by email at gradmidwest@gmail.com or by phone at 952-447-4449. All late orders will incur a $25 late fee.

Regalia Pick-Up

Your regalia will be available for pick-up at the Law School on Wednesday, May 1 in Auerbach Commons from 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. You must complete and submit your Employment Survey through the Career Center before you will be able to pick-up your regalia. If you can’t retrieve your items on May 1, they will be available through the Career Center.

We strongly suggest that you try on your regalia at regalia pick-up in case you need to order a different size. We also recommend that you take your regalia out of the bag when you get home to help eliminate wrinkles.

Regalia Return

All graduates may keep their tam/cap and tassel. Regalia return stations will be located in the Northrop Atrium on Saturday, May 18. You will be charged for any items not returned. You may also purchase your regalia at the return station if you wish to keep it after Commencement.

Dress Code

Most graduates opt to wear something seasonal and/or business casual underneath their regalia. Your hood will have a hood loop that should go around a button on a shirt. If your shirt does not have buttons, use a safety pin to secure the loop to your shirt, or better yet, the gown itself.

Keep in mind that there are many stairs at Northrop to navigate throughout the morning while wearing your regalia. Please make a smart shoe selection.

Remember to bring all of your regalia items with you to the ceremony: tam/cap, gown, hood, and tassel.

FACULTY INFORMATION

All Law School faculty are invited to participate in the Commencement ceremony. You will receive an RSVP request by email in March. Your RSVP will confirm both your attendance at the ceremony and your regalia order. If you own your own regalia, you still need to RSVP for Commencement.

If you have any questions regarding your regalia or have requests for accessibility accommodations, contact Laura Walton, Event Manager, at lawevent@umn.edu prior to the ceremony.
