Northrop Memorial Auditorium, 84 Church Street SE, Minneapolis, on the East Bank of Campus.
The Ceremony begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. (central time) and lasts approximately 2 hours with a reception following the ceremony until 1:00 p.m.
|Student Arrival Time||
Students should plan to arrive at Northrop by 8:30 a.m. Follow the signage and directions from staff about where to assemble.
Please make every effort to arrive by 8:30 a.m. to get lined up and robed properly. The J.D. class photo will be taken at 8:45 a.m., followed by the LL.M. class photo and the M.S.P.L. class photo. Class photos will be taken outside on the Northrop Mall stairs (weather alternative location is inside the auditorium).
Allow time for parking on the East Bank, as lines can be long. If you require handicapped parking, call 626-PARK for assistance.
For more information about parking, traffic, freeway access and maps, go to:
When you arrive, follow the signs to Graduate Check-In and pick up your name card. You will need your name card for the class photo at 8:45 a.m. After the class picture, there will be some time to mingle before lining up alphabetically before the procession into the auditorium.
Graduates will be led at 10:00 a.m. into the auditorium to their reserved seats, and will be directed when it is time to approach the stage by Dean Keyes.
When it’s time to approach the stage, hand your name card to the faculty member announcing the graduates. Once your name is announced, walk across the stage, shake hands with the Dean and return to your seat. Remember to take one second to look at the camera at center stage during the handshake.
Tickets are not necessary and there is no guest limit for graduates. The doors will open at 9:30 a.m. to the public. Early seating will be available for persons with disabilities and the elderly. Staff will be available to provide assistance.
There is a coat check available at Northrop on the East side of the building. Graduates are advised not to bring valuables that they can’t keep with them under their robe. Other than the coat check, there is not a location to store items during the ceremony.
Those with disabilities and the elderly are encouraged to arrive by 9:00 a.m. for both parking and early seating. Staff will be available to assist with early seating.
|Cameras & Video Cameras||
Cameras and video camera are welcome, though aisles cannot be blocked and no one is allowed stage front.
Following the ceremony there will be a light reception around the perimeter of Northrop until 1:00 p.m. Weather permitting the reception will be outside on the Northrop Mall.
Dress code is up to you, though most graduates opt for something seasonal and business to dressy casual. There are many stairs at Northrop to navigate throughout the morning while wearing your regalia, so please make a smart shoe selection.
|Hearing Impaired and Interpreter Accommodations||
If you are attending Commencement and you, a family member, or friend require accommodations for a sign language interpreter at the ceremony, contact Linda Lokensgard by Wednesday, April 15. University Disability Services will work to secure interpreters where there is a need.
|Name Pronunciation / Name Cards||
At Graduate Check-in, you will pick up your name card. Pens will be available for you to mark your card with phonetic notations. Once you have your card, begin assembling for your class photo at 8:45 a.m. Your name card has a number on the back; this is for the photo and for lining up in alphabetical order. Khary Hornsby will have the LL.M. students’ name cards, which will be used during the class photo, so be sure to get yours prior to the photo.
