Steven Champlin ’69

After graduation from the U of M Law School, Professor Steven Champlin ’69 began a 45-year law career with Dorsey & Whitney LLP. During that career Professor Champlin largely focused on serving the construction industry, representing owners, architects, engineers, sureties, subcontractors, suppliers, and others involved in the industry; handled hundreds of litigated or arbitrated cases; served as a construction arbitrator and mediator; and presented scores of papers and speeches at legal and construction industry seminars. He was ranked as a leading U.S. construction lawyer by Chambers USA 2010 to 2015; selected as a Minnesota Super Lawyer 2001-2014; and listed in Best Lawyers in America 2007-2015. Prior to his retirement from Dorsey at the end of December 2014, Professor Champlin served as the Head of the firm’s Construction Group for more than two decades.
Since retiring, Professor Champlin has continued to serve regularly as an arbitrator. He is currently a member of the American Arbitration Association Large, Complex Case National Construction roster; listed on CPR’s National Panel of Distinguished Construction Neutrals; and is a member of the Court of Arbitraton for Sport. In addition, he would like to pass on some of the experiences and knowledge he gained over the course of his practice to U of M law students.
