Although American law generally has been framed in generic terms incumbent on men and women alike, through most of American history law distinguished in significant ways not only between men and women, but among women depending on race, marital status, citizenship, and class. This course examines the gendered aspects of American legal history, emphasizing themes in which women’s relationship to the law has been different from men’s relationship to the law.
