This session will explore the role of private actors and business activity in the climate change-displacement nexus. The invited experts have concentrated expertise in questions of human rights law, transnational and national advocacy strategies, and the challenges and impacts of extractive industries in the Americas. Themes covered will include the human rights impact of false solutions to the climate crisis, rights-based strategies led by affected communities, and innovative efforts from the international community. 

We will be joined by panelists Cristhian Cardoza Zúñiga, member of the San Sebastian indigenous community (Ecuador); Sara Seck, Associate Professor of Law; Yogis and Keddy Chair in Human Rights Law, Schulich School of Law, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sergio Coronado, CINEP (Center for Research and Popular Education), Bogotá, Colombia; and, Viviana Herrera, Latin America Program Coordinator, Mining Watch Canada. The session will be moderated by Amanda Lyons, Executive Director of the Human Rights Center; and Jennie Green, Associate Professor, Human Rights Litigation and International Legal Advocacy Clinic.
