MACDL Names Myon Burrell’s Legal Team as Recipients of Special Achievement Award

The Minnesota Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers has announced that it is recognizing the legal team of Myon Burrell for work they did in securing Burrell’s release after he had served 18 years in prison.

The team, led by Professor Perry Moriearty and Minneapolis criminal defense attorney Dan Guerrero ‘89 of Meshbesher & Spence, includes  Matt DiTullio ’20, Rachael Melby ’20, and Kaitlyn Falk, 3L, who all started working on the team as students through the Law School’s Child Advocacy and Juvenile Justice Clinic.

Burrell, who has steadfastly maintained his innocence, had been sentenced to 41 years in prison for a crime committed when he was 16 years old. The clinic successfully argued his case for immediate release to the Minnesota Board of Pardons. (See “Law Clinic Client Freed After 18 Years in Prison” for a synopsis of the case.)

The team will be will receive the MACDL’s Special Achievement Award at the group’s Annual Dinner & Auction at the Town & Country Club in St. Paul on Oct. 2
