Professor Yale Kamisar, a highly regarded legal scholar and author who served on Minnesota Law’s faculty from 1957-64, passed away on Jan. 30 at the age of 92.

Kamisar, who went on to spend nearly 40 years as a professor at the University of Michigan Law School, was a nationally recognized authority on constitutional law and criminal procedure. He was known as the “father of Miranda” because of an influential article he wrote that was cited by the U.S. Supreme Court in its landmark decision in Miranda v. Arizona.

Prior to his time on the Minnesota Law faculty, Yale served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, becoming a first lieutenant, commanding a platoon and being awarded multiple medals for his combat service, including the Purple Heart.
