Meet the LL.M. Class: Samkelo Dlamini of Eswatini 

Meet Samkelo Dlamini of Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland), who is a Fulbright scholar.  Dlamini, who received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Swaziland, is a member of the Law Society of Eswatini and the South Africa Compliance Institute, He most recently served as a legal officer with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Swaziland. He is interested in pursuing banking and finance law to help alleviate poverty in Eswatini.

You received are a Fulbright scholar.  Can you discuss a little bit about that? 

The Fulbright Scholarship is one of the best exchange programs in the world. I am so excited to be given an opportunity to learn and promote a mutual understanding between my country and the United States.

You were most recently as a legal officer with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Swaziland. Can you discuss what types of things you did in this position?

I was mostly responsible for proving legal and compliance advice to Insurance, retirement, Capital Markets, and Credit and savings institutions. 

What are a few opportunities and challenges of being a lawyer in your native country?

The current political climate is really a challenge right now and yet the financial and telecommunications sectors are really starting to grow.

What is your professional goal in enrolling in an LL.M. Program?

My professional goal is to obtain my LL.M. and then return home and begin to implement all the knowledge I am getting to build relationships that will make it easy for me to do that.

Why did you select Minnesota Law as the place to get you LL.M.?

The mixture of being a top law school and dedicated professors was so appealing, that I couldn’t resist!

Minnesota Law is a place known for putting an emphasis on leadership. What does leadership mean to you?

Leadership is a call to serve. It is understanding that you have a responsibility to contribute to the growth of whatever it is you are doing at that point. 

What are some of your hobbies/interests?

Singing (music), basketball, traveling, and food. 

How do you plan to spend your free time in Minnesota/ the United States?

I want to visit some of the beautiful places here and attend as many events as possible and concerts.

What three words best describe you?

Tenacious, easy-going, and highly focused. 

What are you most looking forward to in your time at Minnesota Law?

Understanding U.S Law, building relationships, and learning what makes great countries great.
