Tribute: Minnesota Law Mourns the Passing of Professor Emeritus Stephen Burns Scallen ‘59 

Professor Emeritus Stephen Scallen ‘59 passed away peacefully at his home earlier in January. Born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on August 24, 1932, he graduated from St. Thomas Academy and the College of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota. He received a J.D. from the University of Minnesota Law School where he was President of the Law Review and also received an M.B.A. from the University of Chicago. He served as a Captain in the United States Air Force from 1955-1957. 

Scallen began his legal career at the law firm of Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. He later returned to the Twin Cities where he joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota Law School.

Scallen was a member of the Board of Trustees of St. Thomas Academy from 1982-1988 and the Board of Trustees of Visitation School from 1984-1991. He also served as Vice Chair and on the Board of Trustees of the Newman Center at the University of Minnesota from 1987-1989. Steve was a founding member and served as Parish Council Chair of St. Sahag Armenian Church in St. Paul, Minnesota, and received the St. Gregory Medal, the highest award of the Armenian Church. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Chacké, his daughter, Julie Scallen, and her husband Philippe Chanial, and his daughter, Nora Scallen and her husband Dan Statsick.  Visiting hours were held on Monday, January 22, 2024, from 4-6 pm at Gill Brothers Funeral Home, 5801 Lyndale Avenue South, Minneapolis, MN. A funeral service was held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, at St. Sahag Armenian Church, 203 North Howell Street, St. Paul, MN 55104. Instead of flowers, memorial donations are preferred to St. Sahag Armenian Church
