Tax time may be less stressful for some low-income Minnesotans who have difficulty paying their tax bills thanks to recent state policy changes resulting the efforts of two students working through Minnesota Law’s Ronald M. Mankoff Tax Clinic.
Minnesota Law Competes in National Moot Court Regional Competition
Two teams of Law School students participated in the regional competition of the National Moot Court Competition from November 12-14, 2021.Â
All of the 3L team members were selected for the competition team based on their strong performances in National Moot Court as 2L students. The competition team members also serve as student directors for the National Moot Court course.

David Weissbrodt, a world-renowned international human rights advocate and scholar who established the Law School’s Human Rights Center and served on the faculty for more than four decades, passed away peacefully on Nov. 11 at the age of 77.
In Minnesota Law’s Newest Clinic, Students Seek Clemency for Clients with Excessive Sentences
Seven years ago, professor JaneAnne Murray was tapped for the steering committee of Clemency Project 2014 (CP2014), a national effort by lawyers and advocates to provide legal assistance for people given excessively harsh prison sentences seeking clemency from President Barack Obama. She thought that to make this work meaningful, she should take on a few clemency cases with her students.
The Impact of Scholarship Support: Benjamin Cooper
Benjamin Cooper, a current 3L at Minnesota Law, has always had a deep interest in legal policy and its impact on communities.Â
After graduating from St. Olaf College, Cooper moved to Minneapolis and began work as a Legal Services Coordinator at Tubman, a nonprofit organization that helps people who have experienced relationship violence, elder abuse, addiction, sexual exploitation or other forms of trauma. Â
Minnesota Law Students Working with Detainee Rights Immigration Clinic Help Secure Withholding of Removal and Obtain the Release of a South Sudanese Client
The James Binger Center for New Americans partners closely with several nonprofit legal services organizations throughout the Twin Cities to provide pro bono legal services to individuals in immigration proceedings. One such partnership involves a Court Observer Program at Minnesota’s Federal Immigration Court in Fort Snelling which is run by the Advocates for Human Rights. In late October 2021, a volunteer Court Observer witnessed a pro se individual struggling in Immigration Court.
Minnesota Law Mourns the Passing of Lauren Graff '19 Â
Lauren Graff '19 died on Oct. 30 after suffering a pulmonary embolism while pregnant. Prior to her passing, she delivered a healthy baby boy, James. Her surviving spouse is Mitchell Ness ’18.Â
"Please join me in offering our heartfelt condolences to Mitchell, baby James, and Lauren’s family," said Dean Garry W. Jenkins in a message to the Minnesota Law community. "Lauren touched the lives of so many in our community and this is a heartbreaking loss."
